Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone, but there are still great ways to save while shopping for friends and family this year. We have put together a list of tips we find very helpful during this time of year.
Make a list (and check it twice)
Write down everyone you plan to buy a gift for and some choices of what you might get them. This will keep you organized and enable you to set an accurate budget.
Set a budget and stick to it
A lot of people are surprised how much they actually spend on holiday gifts. Setting a budget is a great way to save (as long as you stick to it!) On the organized list you just made, put a dollar amount by everyone’s name and add it all up. Then adjust the individual dollar amounts to add up to your target budget.
Do not procrastinate!
Getting your holiday shopping done early will keep you away from the crowds and the stress. When you wait until the last minute to find a gift, you are more likely to throw the budget out the window just to get it over with.
Be a comparison shopper
There are so many websites that make it easy to compare prices from all different retailers. Our favorite comparison shopping site is PriceGrabber.com. You’ll see several retailers offering your item for sale, as well as the prices. You might be surprised at how differently items are priced at different stores! This allows you to see at a glance which store has your item for the smallest price tag.
Ask about friends and family discounts
If you know people who work in retail stores you want to shop in, ask them if the store participates in a friends and family discount program. Many stores allow their employees to offer a discount to their friends and family on certain days or at certain items. Even if they don’t, it doesn’t hurt to ask!
Don’t forget to read the paper
Throughout the year, you can always find coupons for stores in your local newspaper. However, between November and December, the number of coupons and the value of the coupons increase considerably. It is not unusual to find $5 off a purchase of $10 or $15 at your favorite local department store, so keep an eye out for coupons and special sale flyers.
