A Quick and Easy Rainy Day Craft

Make Your Own T-Shirt Bags

DIY T-Shirt Bags

April showers bring May flowers and that means parents are looking for something to do with their children on a rainy day.  Would you like to give your kids an introduction to crafting, but just don’t know where to start? If this sounds like you, then we’ve got the perfect craft for you-your very own handmade t-shirt bag!

The Perfect Craft

Since this project involves using old t-shirts instead of brand new fabric it won’t put undue stress on the environment. Additionally, since this project should only take between 5 to 10 minutes to complete your kid(s) should be finished long before losing interest.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • An old t-shirt (any size will do)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine, Stapler or Iron on Hem Tape

Step One

Turn Shirt Inside Out

The first thing that you’ll need to do is flip the t-shirt inside out.  Then, close up the hem of the shirt using a sewing machine, a stapler, or iron on hem tape.

Notice how the lines are straight and simple-this helps contribute to this project’s ease of use. If you’re doing this with a group of smaller children the stapler might be the way to go and don’t worry…we’ve tested it and the staples should hold.

If, on the other hand, your kids are a little bit older this is a great way to introduce them to the sewing machine.  If you want to u

se the iron on hem tape, follow the directions on the package.

Step Two

Flip the shirt right side out again and cut off the sleeves.  If your t-shirt has a higher crew neck, draw a deeper scoop along the neckline and cut along the line. You now have your very own t-shirt bag!

So now that you have a bag, what can you do with it?  Here are a few ideas:

Kids Party Craft

You can use blank t-shirtsfor party favors. Let the kids make their own bag and then bring out the supplies to let them decorate it, too. They

can fill them up with all that candy from the piñata.

Grocery Bags

Bags made from larger shirts can be used as reusable grocery sacks. These can be easily washed to get rid of germs that can build up during your grocery store visits.

All Purpose

Printed shirts make cute carry-alls for school, lunches, work, or as a quick and easy gym-bag.  One more thing…After recycling all of your old shirts into bags, you’ll need to replace them. Take a look at our online store to get some fresh new shirts for kids and adults alike.

Could you do the same thing with a tank top?? (then you wouldn’t have to take off the sleeves)
