T-Shirt Craft: “To-TEE-ly” Cool Tote Bag

Reuse, Refashion, Repurpose, Recycle, or Up cycle…whatever you call it, it’s always fun to restyle one fashion piece into a totally new one. For this one we took inspiration from other craft projects we’ve come across and added a few of our own twists.

The bag was really simple to make and requires only basic sewing skills. If you can sew a straight line, you can make this bag. Here’s what you will need.

  • Blank T-shirt (it needs to be a crew neck, but that is the only requirement. You can use any size, and the shirt can be blank or decorated)
  • Rings for handles (we used 7″, but they need to be in proportion to your finished bag size)
    • Embroidery hoops
    • Craft Rings (found in the leather working section of our local craft store)
    • Fashion purse handles
  • Ribbon or other covering for handles if needed (We used lime green duct tape!)
  • Embellishments
  • Glue Gun
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors

Step 1: Turn the t-shirt you are using for the main handbag inside out and lay flat. Fold in half lengthwise. Round the bottom by cutting only the bottom hemline about 5 inches up the side.

Step 2: Cut a diagonal line a few inches under the arm to the middle of the t-shirt. Open and lay flat.

Step 3: Pin the bottom rounded edge together and sew closed with your sewing machine.

Step 4: Handles – If desired you can wrap your handles with ribbon.  To do so, wrap tightly overlapping the ribbon and use hot glue to secure the ends.  Every few inches add another drop of hot glue to keep the ribbon in place and to keep it from unraveling. In our project, we used neon green duct tape (duct tape is now available in a number of fashionable colors and patterns)  We couldn’t resist the bright color and it was super easy to use!

Step 5: Attaching the handles – Lay out the purse and fold back the top. Place the handle so there is about 3 1/2 – 4″ from the handle to the top point.

Step 6: Finishing – To keep the folded triangle shape of the fabric in place, around the handle, pin the fabric and stitch in place.

Step 7: Embellishment! Now feel free to hot glue, hand-stitch, and decorate to show your true personality!
